Well-deserved Oscars went to Ray Milland, Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder for a movie that was only made because the studio owed Wilder a picture of his choosing. Critic James Agee bemoaned the dropping of the novel's explanation for the hero's drinking: a homosexual affair in college. Frank Faylen is unforgettable as Bim, the creepy male nurse at the Bellevue alcoholic ward.
